Isle of Skye Accordion & Fiddle Club & Pan Records Presents:
The Brandon McPhee Band: A Tribute to Sir Jimmy Shand
Friday 19th September - 7:30PM
Sir Jimmy Shand and his band were the only traditional Scottish group to break into Britain’s Top 20 in the 1950s. In 1955, The Bluebell Polka became a chart hit - produced by a then-unknown George Martin at what would become the UK’s most legendary recording venue: Abbey Rod Studios in London. In later years, Martin would go on to produce The Beatles. Who knows - if not for Jimmy Shand, perhaps history might have played out differently.
Jimmy Shand’s music transcended borders, reaching audiences across Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Canadam the United States, and the UK. Remarkably, over 80% of his performances took place south of the Scottish border in England - yet his tours spanned the globe. His live shows sold out iconic venues including the Sydney Opera House and Massey Hall in Toronto. The list of sell-outs goes on and on.
Now, in the 25th year since Jimmy Shand’s passing, Brandon McPhee and his band play tribute with a special evening dedicated to the music of the great man. At just 17 years old Brandon became the youngest ever winner of the Scottish Senior Accordian Championship in its 65year history. He also had the honour of bringing the Jimmy Shand Shield home to Caithness.
